Only Rain Down the Drain!

It’s that time of year again, time to get outdoors, and also time for yard work and the yard waste that comes along with it. Yard waste that is swept into storm drains can clog them and cause streets and basements to flood. Anything that enters a storm drain or storm sewer goes untreated into the same bodies of water we use for swimming, fishing, and drinking water. When yard waste ends up in creeks and rivers it decomposes, releasing excess nitrogen and phosphorus. These nutrients promote excessive growth of algae in the water. As the water becomes polluted, it no longer supports aquatic life and becomes a health hazard.

Ways that you can prevent yard waste from polluting our waters:

  • Sweep up yard waste instead of hosing or sweeping it into the storm drain

  • Mulch or compost your yard clippings

  • Contact your local waste hauler for yard waste pick up services

Remember… ONLY RAIN DOWN THE DRAIN!
