Detox Your Domicile!

Household hazardous waste collection ends September 30

St. Charles County, MO -Time is running out to dispose of those leftover hazardous chemicals now lurking in your garage, under your sink, and in the shed. For St. Charles County residents who care about our environment and need a place to properly dispose of household hazardous waste, Recycle Works Central is accepting items from now until September 30. The best part is, no appointment is required. Just bring in your items Tuesday through Saturday between 9 A.M. and 11 A.M. Recycle Works complements curbside recycling programs by taking in items not typically collected at the curb.

Before visiting Recycle Works Central, please make sure your waste is properly packed.

  • Do not mix wastes
  • Leave material in its original container, with the label intact
  • Items not in original packaging should be clearly labeled with contents. Mixed waste in plastic bags will NOT be accepted
  • Be sure the lid is secure
  • Place the product inside a box lined with newspaper (fill gaps with crumpled newspaper to prevent spills during transport)
  • Place filled box in the trunk of your vehicle

While you are at the collection site, please remain in your vehicle at all times for your safety.

Latex paint is no longer accepted at either Recycle Works location. Check with local charities or schools to see if they can use your leftover paint. If this is not possible, let the paint air dry away from children and pets. One method is to pour the latex paint into a paper box or bag, and add absorbent material such as shredded newspaper or cat box filler to speed drying. You can then throw the dried paint away with your normal trash, and recycle the empty paint can. Leftover paint products should never be dumped out on the ground, as this can contaminate groundwater and possibly harm wildlife. If you have used up all of your latex paint and just need to recycle the empty cans, Recycle Works West accepts plastic containers and Recycle Works Central will take both metal and plastic paint containers.

For a complete list of items accepted, please visit our website at www.scchealth.org/es or call (636) 949-7415 for more information. You can also reduce the number of dangerous chemicals you use, and protect your family’s health, by purchasing less toxic products. Visit our website at www.scchealth.org for a list of alternative cleaning solutions.  Go to the “Waste” section, then click on “Household Hazardous Waste.”
